Douglas L. Shields, 73, of Naperville, Illinois, formerly of Louisville, Kentucky, and originally of Atlanta, died peacefully Sunday, July 2, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born May 17, 1944, in Atlanta to Elizabeth and James Shields.
Doug is survived by his wife of almost 46 years, Jan Shields “nee DuBois”; three children Tray, Shannon (Aaron) Temple and Cameron (Katie) Shields; his beloved grandchildren Paxton, Cannon and Emery Shields; Kate, Harper and William Temple; his brother Jim, and nephew Kevin of the Atlanta area.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Doug grew up in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. He graduated from North Fulton High School in 1963 where his love of football began. He continued his football career at the University of Georgia until he joined the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served for four years, serving on the USS Midway and USS Myles C. Fox.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of West Georgia and earned a degree in political science and history. Doug worked for and proudly retired from Quality Park Products after 43 years.
Doug and Jan moved to Naperville in 1989 from Louisville, where they continued to raise their family. He was a longtime member of Cress Creek Country Club, having served on the board for several years and was an avid golfer. He was a founding member and coach of the Naperville Diamonds Girls Softball League, but also was involved in the Naperville Little League. He cherished his involvement with the City of Hope Charity.
Most importantly, he loved his wife, children and grandchildren with all his heart. He loved to tell a joke, tell a good story and play golf. He will be tremendously missed by all that knew him. Doug Shields, you were a “DGG,” a damn good guy.
