Hubert Norton Darnell

Hubert Norton Darnell, 80, of Betty’s Creek Community, passed away May 14, 2017, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

Hubert was born in Rabun County, the son of the late Hubert High Darnell and the late Ruth Norton Darnell. 

Hubert was stationed in Alaska during his service in the U.S. Army. He worked at Burlington Industries, was a part of Darnell Produce with his father and a partner with his brother in the Piggly Wiggly store in Dillard. Hubert worked many years at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 57 years. A deacon at Betty’s Creek Baptist Church, Hubert loved singing all of his life and for many years sang in a quartet. 

In addition to his parents, his brother, Stanley “Butch” Darnell, preceded Hubert in death.

Hubert is survived by his wife, Beatrice Parker Darnell; a sister, Pat Ketterson (Andy) of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister-in-law, Kay Darnell of Betty’s Creek; aunt, Chris Wilson of Dillard; niece, Hilary Ketterson of Charleston, South Carolina; nephew Andrew Ketterson of Omaha, Nebraska.

The family wanted to extend their many thanks and gratitude to Hugh Justice for all of his kind and compassionate care for Hubert.

The family received friends Tuesday, May 16, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. at Beck Funeral Home. 

A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at Betty’s Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Don Samples, Micky Justice and Jerry Gragg officiating.      

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Rabun County Gideon’s Org., P.O. Box 241, Clayton, Georgia 30525.
