Helen Cannon Hunter

Helen Cannon Hunter, 86, of Clayton, died Monday, May, 1, 2017, at her residence. She was the wife of Lloyd Hunter.

Born in Clayton on Sept. 14, 1930, she was the daughter of the late R.E. Cannon and Essie Lee Williams. Helen was a graduate of Rabun County High School and Piedmont College, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. 

She taught English at Rabun County High School from 1951-54 and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, the Gideon’s Auxiliary, Ideal Sunday School Class, WMU, and the Grace Green Prayer Group. She was a member of Clayton Baptist Church since 1943 and taught Sunday school for 63 years. She was a member of the Alay Witness Team for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, R.E. and Essie Lee Cannon, by brother R.E. Cannon Jr. and by brother John Manning Cannon.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Hunter, of the home, two daughters, Dr. Margaret (Peggy) Kowalski (Mike) of Tucson, Arizona, and Patricia (Patty) Vining (David) of Tucker, one granddaughter, Samantha (Sam) Vining, of Tucker, and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services were Friday, May 5, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Clayton Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joey Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Clayton Baptist Cemetery.

The body was at Hunter Funeral Home, where visitation was at the Eastside Chapel on Thursday evening, May 4, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. The body was placed at the church on Friday, May 5, 2017, from noon-1 p.m. (the service hour) to lie in state. The family was at the home on Hunter Lane in Clayton.
