Emily Norton, a resident of Buford, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2016.

She grew up in Tallulah Falls, where she attended Tallulah Falls School. She graduated there and continued her education at Wesleyan College in Macon, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in three years with a major in history and a minor in religion.

Having also studied piano at Wesleyan, she later taught music at Tallulah Falls School. After teaching one year in Griffin, she spent the remainder of her teaching career at Decatur High School in Decatur, where she taught American history and political science.

She became chair of the Social Science Department, and, while teaching, earned a master’s degree in Political Science at Emory University, with honors in her field.

Emily retired early to give almost 20 years of home care to her bedridden mother, Myrtle (wife of Ernest Norton), here in Clayton. Before moving to Buford, she lived on Lake Lanier and spent many happy years there.

There are no immediate survivors.

A viewing will be Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Flanigan Funeral Home, 4400 S. Lee St., Buford, which will be followed by a graveside service at Broadlawn Memorial Garden, 5979 New Bethany Rd., Buford.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church of her youth — Tallulah Falls United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 25, Tallulah Falls, Georgia 30573.
