Ludie Virginia Kelly Turpin

Ludie Virginia Kelly Turpin, 92, a long-time resident of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, passed away on Aug. 23, 2016, at The Courtyards-Senior Living, Oak Ridge. 

She was born June 10, 1924, in Dillard.

Ludie grew up in Northeast Georgia and graduated from Tallulah Falls School in Tallulah Falls in 1942. She was employed at the Fontana Dam Project (North Carolina) in 1943 as a clerical employee. While her husband served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands and Germany, Ludie moved from North Carolina to Oak Ridge in 1944 with her parents and was employed by Clinton Engineer Works, as a clerical employee.

After her husband’s discharge from the Army in 1946,  J. Hugh Turpin, joined her in Oak Ridge. When her children were small, Ludie left the workforce. In 1965, she was employed by Anderson County. She initially worked in the County Court Clerk’s Office and later transferred to the Clerk and Master’s Office where she was the deputy probate clerk. She took much pride in her work and felt rewarded by having opportunities to help and assist the citizens of Anderson County. She retired from the county after more than 20 years of service.

Ludie was a long-time member of Robertsville Baptist Church, the Women’s Club of Oak Ridge and the Order of Eastern Star, where she held the office of Worthy Matron in 1982. She was a talented and creative crafter of handmade items. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, basket weaving, needlepoint and other handicraft activities. She also enjoyed cooking, family gatherings, spending time with friends and traveling.

She was preceded in death in 2011 by her husband of more than 69 years. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Margie Carver Kelly, her three brothers, Bryon, Jack and Gilbert Kelly and a nephew, Wayne Kelly.

She is survived by her son, Hugh Kelly Turpin, Oak Ridge, her daughter, Linda (Allen) Pittman, The Woodlands, Texas; grandsons, Russell Turpin, Lexington, Kentucky, and Matthew Pittman, College Station, Texas; a granddaughter, Tracy Turpin (Stephen) Schuster, Soddy Daisy, Tennessee; two great-grandsons, Landon and Harrison Schuster; sister-in-law, Betty (Mrs. Jack) Kelly, Clinton, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Albert (Winnie) Turpin, Lakemont, and a host of nieces, nephews, Kelly and Carver cousins and many lifelong friends.

In memory of Ludie, her family asks that you consider contributing to the Dillard United Methodist Church, Highway 441, Dillard, Georgia 30537. 

The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, from 1-2 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Clayton, GA. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m., with the Rev. James Turpen officiating.  

Interment will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Dillard.
