Sarah ‘Sally’ Grace Smith

Sarah Grace Hackbardt Smith, “Sally,” 97, of Sister Bay, Wisconsin, passed Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society Scandia Village.

She was born Oct. 22, 1919, the daughter of the late Rev. Walter and Mary (Hertzler) Pugh in Bedford County, Colerain Township, Pennsylvania. Following her graduation from East Hempfield High School in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1937, Sally received her degree in business at Catawba College in 1941. 

She was a secretary for a while and worked for General Motors during the war where she met her first husband, Alfred D. Hackbardt, who she married in 1946. He passed July 19,1967. Sally met Charles E. Smith at a dance and married him in 1970. He passed in Nov. 22, 2003. Sally was primarily a loving, fun, joyful wife, mother, homemaker, friend and servant of God for her whole life.

She was an active member of Lakewood Village Community Church in California and then Clayton First United Methodist Church in Clayton before moving to Door County. Sally was a talented artist of watercolor and oil medium who took great pleasure in painting on her porch and visiting and living by the ocean and the mountains. She loved playing golf, bridge, and entertaining family and friends.

Sally’s love will live on in the hearts of daughter, the Rev. Carol L. Hackbardt of Sister Bay; one stepson; nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Alfred D. Hackbardt and Charles E. Smith; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy (John) Pfeiffer and Molly (Russ) Dobbins.

A memorial service celebrating Sally’s life was held Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sister Bay.

Interment will be in the family North Ensley Cemetery in Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be donated to Good Samaritan Society Scandia Village in Sister Bay, Clayton First United Methodist Church in Clayton or a charity of your choice.
