Carolyn H. Smith, 84, U.S. Army nurse, passed away Aug. 3, 2017, at home surrounded by her loving husband of 60-plus years, Harold Smith, formerly of Lakemont.
Mrs. Smith, a native of Auburn, New York, graduated from Genoa Central School in 1949, shortly thereafter she entered nursing school at Auburn Memorial Hospital, graduating in 1952. Shortly after graduation, she entered the Army Nurse Corps and was stationed at Ft. Gordon. There she met her husband and was married in the post chapel.
In December 1957, she joined her husband in Germany and began working in the U.S. Army hospital. Returning to the United States in February 1959, along with her husband, she began working at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Following a nursing career of 30 years, she retired from nursing and worked for Vanguard Investment Group in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, retiring in 1998.
Family members, in addition to her husband, include her children: Debra (Andy) of North East, Maryland, Darryl of Flower Mound, Texas, and Dwayne (Melissa) of Aurora, Colorado; four grandchildren, and a special niece Donna of Sunnyvale, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents A. Warde and Ruth Hussey, two sisters Pauline and Eleanor of Auburn; one brother Burton Hussey of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The family received friends Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, from 1-2 p.m. A funeral service followed in the Chapel of Beck Funeral Home at 2 p.m., with Pastor Jewell Gaines of Lakemont Baptist Church officiating. Carolyn was buried in Rabun Memorial Park Cemetery in Tiger with military honors.
