Barbara Earnest Bynum, 83, passed away Nov. 19, 2016, in Melbourne, Florida. A native Miamian, she was born on Jan. 14, 1933, to Mary Kelley Earnest and Walter George Earnest.
She grew up in Miami Shores Village, and was, from childhood, a member of Miami Shores Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Miami Edison Senior High SChool, and attended The University of Miami, where she was a cheerleader and a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Later in her life, she became a realtor at Baden Realty in Miami Shores. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader, and a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and The Spade and Trowel Garden Club.
Barbara was a devoted and affectionate daughter. She worked for her father for many years, and cherished her memories of that time. She was a tireless and loving caregiver for her mother.
Following the death of her greatly beloved first child, Elizabeth “Beth” Bynum of cancer, Barbara formed the The Beth Bynum Memorial Chapter of Women’s Cancer Association of The University of Miami.
Barbara is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 65 years, James William Bynum of Clayton; her children, Brenda Bynum (G.E. Stinson) of Los Angeles, California, and William Bynum (Terri Myers) of Melbourne, Florida; her grandchildren, Daniel Bynum, Whitney Russell (Mark Russell), and Calvin Bynum; and her great-granddaughter Henley Russell. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Nancy Earnest of Miami, Florida; her sisters-in-law Roslyn Strickland, Emily Albright (Edward), and Armede Bynum, all of Clayton; and by six nieces and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter George Earnest Jr., of Miami, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to a charity of your choice.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
